Greetings TNOCS Community!
Welcome back for Round 2 of The Song of the 2000’s Tournament!
Below you will find 16 legendary matchups from the 32 songs that won last week’s round. As tough as the choices were last week… they are only getting tougher!
As a reminder, the instructions are different from when nominations were submitted:
- When you are voting below, just pick your favorite of the choices
- Not the one that was more popular or the one that was widely appreciated — just YOUR favorite of the two songs.
Winners will make it to the Sweet 16, and the losers will live on in our hearts and in our hashtags…
And if you’re new around here, welcome! And check out some of the other excellent articles from TNOCS contributors…
Remember: voting is open now until Saturday, 3:30 AM GMT.
Thanks for stopping by and voting!!!

Some more tough decisions to make; Crazy or Seven Nation Army? Rehab or Lose Yourself?? Hey Ya or Try Again???
So far I’m 6 from 6 voting for Gaga. I reckon Umbrella will be her biggest test this round.
Interesting draw for Beyonce facing off against herself in Destiny’s Child. Assured of a place in the next round though.
Beyoncé had 5 songs originally (3 solo, 2 with Destiny’s Child)… she was likely to face herself at some point.
I think Crazy vs Seven Nation Army was the hardest choice for me in this round… Runner up was Can’t Get You Out of My Head vs The Middle.
“Poker Face” vs. “Viva la Vida” and the aforementioned Gnarls Barkley/The White Stripes smackdown, both, made me pause.
All these years, I’ve been loving Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle”, thinking I was listening to Fall Out Boy. Also, I think it should be called “Everything Will Be Alright”. It’s a great radio song.
“Poker Face” vs. “Viva la Vida”
It’s only Wednesday, and I’m already in mourning.
The rock versus pop matchups genuinely intrigue me. I don’t think Vox Lux cracked a million at the box office. I can’t think of a more critically underrated movie. Also,
we’re living in the middle of a Coldplay backlash.
Since U Been Gone is credited to Carrie Underwood instead of Kelly Clarkson
On the other hand, kudos for pairing said song with a similarly Princeified second person pronoun.
“U will now listen to my voice. My voice will help U and guide U deeper into Uropa.”
-Max von Sydow
Request for correction is in… should be fixed later today…
…
Welcome, mmendes68! Very glad that you’re here!
Rehab vs. Lose Yourself was the toughest.
That felt like it should be a Final Four matchup, or at the very least Elite 8.
To me, it’s like pinnacle form Duke and Kentucky meeting in the 2nd round.
That’s still a raw spot 30 years later…
So much fun. Thanks for doing this, Pauly!
I like “Paper Planes” but…all my single ladies! Don’t let Beyonce get so thoroughly trounced! At least Lil Jon is getting pummeled by another song that he brought to life.
It wasn’t that hard for me overall except the Lady Gaga ones. Some tough matchups there. Maybe I’m spoiled because I’ve done the 1980s post for my Fantasy Number Ones series, and the 1984 picks really drove me nuts, as you’ll soon see.
I remember what’s the most #2 song ever.
Missed the first round by a dozen hours but the same sixteen I would have voted are still alive this round and I put them up for nomination.
I usually stay in touch with today’s music from what’s played at our high school dances but many of these songs are not in the rotation.
On a side note, one song that has been a staple of our dances is “The Electric Slide” for about fifteen years.
Research shows it’s from the ’80’s and many a law suit has been filed about what version can be played on the radio and in concert.
Any responses?
By the way, for those wondering, my church finally unveiled its final four favorite hymns matchups that will be covered each week in August, and the winners are:
Be Thou My Vision
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
For the Beauty of the Earth
Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
Yep, no Amazing Grace, no A Mighty Fortress is Our God, no Morning Has Broken. Go figure.
I definitely only know one of these (Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee) — I may know the others but don’t recognize the titles.
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling is a Methodist hymn (Charles Wesley provenance), though that does not mean beans about your church. Apparently Be Thou My Vision has Irish origins and For the Beauty of the Earth has English origins.
Thanks for sharing, Ozmoe!

I love all of these, but I would have to go with Be Thou My Vision if I could only choose one.
Those are some boring choices. I need “Ready For A Miracle” or “Jesus On The Mainline” to get my blood pumping.
I’d vote for “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” out of the nominees.
#Justice4ShineJesusShine
Clearly not my denomination. I thought Love Divine… and Joyful, Joyful were the same melody with different lyrics.
Oh come ON!! Bad Romance vs Mr Brightside? That’s just evil to have to pick between those 2!
Interesting to see the razor thin margins on some of these, and the landslide some others have.
[Munches popcorn and waits impatiently]
muahahahahaha!!! My evil plans have come to fruition!!!
“Bye Bye Bye” is beating “Family Affair”? What is wrong with you people?
With Single Ladies likely to lose, nothing means anything…
You weren’t kidding about tough choices.
Yeah vs. Get Low?
Just Dance vs. Umbrella?
Toxic vs. In da Club?
I Gotta Feeling vs. Work It?!?
Honestly, the fact that “Since U Been Gone” over “Get Ur Freak On” was my easiest pick says a lot about the strength of this bracket.
