I’m back, and ready to accept the challenge of a brand new Friday Flash Review.
You all know the drill: mt58 randomly selects a genre, category, or some other musical common denominator for you all to think on… and then I talk about the song that you choose.
This time around, we’ll leave the actual song nominations to the commenters.
mt, what’s up for this Friday?
It’s a good one! It’s:
“Number One Songs By German Artists That Reference Red Balloons!“
Sorry, Maybe too restrictive? OK, how about:
OK, we have a category!
In the comments below: nominate a favorite that you’d like to see in a Flash Review.
The comment with the most upvotes get the nod.
See you Friday!

Hmmm … something I’m on the fence about would be good here … how about Quiet Riot’s “Bang Your Head”? Either that or Def Leppard’s “Armageddon It”?
Because it takes itself so seriously:
Europe – The Final Countdown
Or Scorpions – Rock You Like a Hurricane
One of the first albums I ever bought and one of the first I discarded as the 90s came around. Still have a soft spot for the lead track so you’ve got my vote for reappraisal of that.
A damn guilty pleasure!
I can get behind this choice
I’ll try to get as close to punk as I possibly can and go with Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”
Stop it! Ratt’s “Round and Round” for the WIN
This was going to be my suggestion, too.
Then please make sure to thumbs up the entry! #VotesMatter
Oops. I’ve been upvoting them all because I like them all. Rock!
“Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)” by Cinderella. Gotta get some Cinderella up in this joint!

I’m not sure if Enuff Z’Nuff is metal enough, but I saw “Fly High, Michelle” on Headbanger’s Ball.
I nominate “I Could Never Be Without You”.
“Kiss Me Deadly” – Lita Ford or “Summertime Girls” – Y&T
Yes please to Lita!!!
Poison’s “Talk Dirty To Me”. (Although moreso an appraisal of the 45 picture sleeve than the song itself. It confused the hell out of this pubescent boy.)
Def Leppard’s “Photograph” is definitely 80s hair, albeit maybe not as metal as some. Still, it’s a classic from the decade in my mind.
Jon. Good choice but it does come with a side note. Are we talking strictly Hair Metal or a Heavy Metal spinoff.
Like any good librarian, I went not to the dusty tomes of the backroom
but to the illuminating writings of our own “Virgin” (or friendly Dog) and
scoured his “What Makes” so and so, so and so.
He did a great job on Heavy Metal and indicated there would be a spinoff
and I’m wondering if Hair Metal was that scene.
In scrolling through his Heavy Metal bands there are a few who fall into
the Hair Metal categories but from the choices presented in this essay,
they seem to fit into a ’80’s scene, not ’70’s or late ’60’s.
Bon Jovi and Guns and Roses would be my choice de guerre but if we’re going by the options available, Scorpions “Rock Me Like a Hurricane”
would be my pick.
But I reserve the fact that many acts of the ’70’s would give the Hair Metal
groups a run for their money (Ahem, Mr. Rod Stewart and company).
Looks like we need a Hair Metal entry for the Theoretically Speaking feature!
For this feature, it’s the parochial definition of “you know it when you hear it:” Wall of sound guitars, matched with syrupy melodies, simple harmonies, and lots of hairspray.
I think the last criteria keeps the options solidly in the 80s. Would you agree? 😎
Definitely of a time, say between 1984 and 1992, so anything from Adrenalize would fit, but not Pyromania (Love At First Sting would be ok, but not Blackout).
Also, it must have a certain party-esque vibe (so not no to Metallica and Megadeth) and have increasingly pop sensibilities.
And hair. Lots of teased, Aqua-Netted hair. Even G&R had big hair in the Welcome To The Jungle vid.
I’m late to the game here but check What Makes Heavy Metal Heavy Metal? Part 3 for some hair metal shenanigans.
PRO TIP: At this point, we have some good options, so it might be beneficial to vote instead of add more options at this point. We’re one day in and the lead dog is mt’s very own “The Final Countdown.”.
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to review this song! But so you really want the sysop to decide the song for what was supposed to be “the people’s choice?” 😎
ROCK THE VOTE (like a hurricane)!
Got your back, JD!
All of the Above. 😁
Don’t make me choose!!!!!
I am all for the Final Countdown though, if for no other reason than for the fact it is one of only EIGHT 80s videos to have a billion+ views on YouTube. One. Of Eight. (Learned that fun fact the other week when Carless Whisper crossed the Billion Views mark)
The Final Countdown.
I don’t even recall the video for that. I’m thinking 95% of those views are people pulling it up so they can play those cheestastic opening 30 seconds or so, then they turn it off. Ha!
I was just upvoting everything.
I officially cast my vote for “Rock Me Like a Hurricane”.
BZZZZZT! TIME’S UP!
The votes have been cast. The winning entry has been selected. Stay tuned for a Flash Friday Review… on Friday!
We’re down to The Final Countdown.
Dah-nana-dah, dah-na-nep-da-nah….
