Hello music lovers! I’m back and ready to accept the challenge, and come up with a brand new Friday Flash Review.
You all know the drill: mt58 randomly selects a genre, category, or some other musical common denominator for you all to think on… and then I talk about the song that you choose.
OK, mt, what’s up for this Friday?
Well… It’s another wide-ranging category! It’s:
“Number One ABBA Songs Where Your Mother Always Got The Words Wrong”
Too limiting? Förlåt, Johån. Let’s try that again. How about:
ALTERNATIVE SONGS FROM THE 2010’s THAT YOU HEARD ON THE RADIO
OK, we have a category!
In the comments below: nominate ONE favorite that you’d like to see in a Flash Review. Definitely chat and reply with each other about the choices, but remember:
The comment with the most upvotes get the nod.
See you Friday!

Hmmm…at first I thought this would be a hard one, as I hardly know any alternative songs from the 2010s that I heard on the radio.
I can only think of one song that I’d say qualifies, in fact.
Well, I guess it’s easy!
I nominate “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye.
I’ll just go ahead and give my vote to this one. My radio listening shrunk to virtually nil but I did hear it on an in-store radio.
We’ll be getting to Gotye in the not too distant future over at the mothership – sorry for the spoiler! If it does win it’ll be interesting to see if Jon goes with a copy and paste review when we get to it at Tom’s place or changes his mind in the interim.
In the interests of giving a non #1 a go I have to give my vote elsewhere.
I nominate “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Great song, but shouldn’t the submissions for this one be 2010-2019?
You’re absolutely right. I’m still not used to being in this century.
In that case, I hereby nominate “Recovery” by Frank Turner.

This is a cool song. Never heard it before but it’s catchy!
He tours a lot and puts on a great show. Catch him when he comes through your town.
Me, too!
Wait… you mean the word wasn’t tangerine???
First of all, this is a sad category. Not a lot of meat on this bone (due mainly to the “heard on the radio” limitation).
I’ll nominate “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men. Though if somebody dropped some magnetic zeros into the options I wouldn’t balk at that either.

Great song. Icelandic trumpet. I like it.
Oh, and, HOW CAN THIS POSSIBLY BE *12 * YEARS OLD???
{ re: the “radio” limitation – that’s on me, not Jon. The “indie” category is so broad and was so popular in the ’10s that I feared we’d have a lack of critical mass. }
Don’t forget to vote for the song you want to get reviewed!
Sufjan Stevens’ “Drawn to the Blood”.
No. That didn’t happen.
Japandroids’ “The House That Heaven Built” could have been a massive hit in 2003. Instead, in 2012, it sounds like rock’s last stand.
I nominate Alabama Shakes’ “Hold On”.
I think Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes modeled themselves after Poi Dog Pondering. Darn. “Home” came out in 2009. Love that song. Even more than “Everybody’s Trying”.
And this is a hard one. But you need parameters. It can’t just be any song from the 2010s.
“Hold On” is the only song I could think of. It’s both, my nomination by default, and a song that made me purchase Boys and Girls.
Tough choice, so many options. Guess it depends which radio station you listen to as well.
I’ll go with the one that came to mind first; Elephant by Tame Impala.

I didn’t want to cheat. “Hold On” is the edgiest song that made it onto playlists here. I almost went with “Rolling in the Deep”.
Fortunately for me there’s no cheating required as we have BBC 6 Music and the independent Radio X that are national stations focused on alternative music. Plus in the evenings Radio 1 moves from mainstream pop and top 40 to alternative programming as well.
I thought “Pumped Up Kicks” was the obvious choice (along with Gotye). Or maybe “Tongue Tied” by Grouplove — but not sure we’re the crowd for that one.
My vote is for “Midnight City” by M83:

Ahhh, I just posted that song for a Crilley’s Category the other week at the mothership! I’m all in for Midnight City.
Oh, which Black Keys song to pick, which one to pick, they’re all so good from the teens from them…..
Eenie meenie meiney-
LONELY BOY!
Of course! I was about to vote for Gotye, and then I read this, I don’t know why my siblings and I used to like it, maybe it was due to the video.
That video is absolutely priceless, soooo good, lol.

Well this is tough, Lonely Boy came to mind, as did Midnight City. Might have to come down to a toss of a coin as to who to give my vote to.
I’m also nominating Muse’s “Madness”. Love that song.
The video For Your Consideration and viewing/listening pleasure….
I’d forgotten just how erotically exhilarating this song is, the way it builds up to that final burst from Matthew of ‘That it’s Real Looooooovvvvvvvvve’, dammit that is so good. I keep putting it on repeat all evening now that I’ve reminded myself of its awesomeness, lol.

V-dog’s mention of “Recovery” made me think of this tune that was out around the same time (both of them were among the final batch of songs I purchased off iTunes… has it really been ten years??). Anyway, it’s “Riptide” by Vance Joy:

Have been listening to “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers this past week. I almost selected it as my Wednesday Ear Worm. Seems like an interesting song for your review technique in that the category ratings could really swing all over the place.
TNOCSers! Voting closes in about 3 hours (8PM EDT). As of now, we have a clear winner. But if the current leader isn’t your jam, changing that outcome is 100% in your capable hands.
Cheers!
