I never really got over my fear of public performance. So my stage presence was essentially nil, standing in one place holding the mic stand.
And refusing to make eye contact with any observers.
That also meant… that I didn’t take a whole lot of chances with my song selections. I always envied those who could open the song book, pick a song seemingly at random, and perform it at least halfway decently.
The closest I ever came to “kamikaze karaoke” was when I sang Alien Ant Farm’s cover of Smooth Criminal.
I mean, I suppose I was as on-key as I needed to be, but it takes a certain kind of stage presence to pull that one off (see above: I had nil).
I may have uttered an apology into the mic after that one.
As I mentioned before, I have a very narrow natural vocal range. I do have the ability to go very high, but not much in the somewhat-higher-than-middle range that a lot of songs require. Karaoke machines do have the capability to pitch a song down, which conceivably could have increased my options.
But I also happen to be OCD about the way a song sounds, and always tried to make myself “sound just like the record.” So that was a no go.
That still left a bunch of tunes at my disposal. I (fairly) successfully attempted everything…
🎤 …from Elvis Presley’s Teddy Bear
🎤 … to Cake’s Never There
🎤 … the Partridge Family’s I Think I Love You
🎤 ... to Modern English’s I Melt With You.
I was occasionally fortunate enough to be asked to be the male half on Summer Nights and Love Shack (the latter was especially fun; makes me wish I had tried Rock Lobster at least once).
Need You Tonight from INXS and Santana’s Smooth were mostly in my range, although I did strain to hit the higher notes in the choruses without sounding like Peter Brady making that change.
Then there was Shaggy’s Angel, which started out as one of my favorites (going back and forth between the singing and sorta-rapping was entertaining even to me), but I quickly got sick of it when my friends asked me to do it every…single…week.
I empathize with any actual touring performers who have to do the same set of songs night after night and keep it fresh.
Now what I lacked in melodic range, I made up for with a decent sense of rhythm, which made me gravitate toward rap. Bust A Move, Rump Shaker, and The Humpty Dance were my favorites.
I’d known them since they were first hits, so had the lyrics down pat and got to the point where I barely needed the video monitor to keep up the flow.
(foreshadowing…)
The audience always got a kick out of seeing this skinny, dorky white guy spitting bars. Ironically, my worst karaoke performance was a rap song done by an actual white guy, Ice Ice Baby… In my defense, I’d been pushed beyond my normal two-drink limit and was in no condition to pull off anything aside from maybe Friends In Low Places.
I guess the good news is I don’t even remember it enough to be embarrassed by it, so we’ll just leave it at that.
This being Clearwater Beach, the two busiest times of year for Fanny’s were during Spring Break (tons of college students out to party), and the week leading up to New Year’s Day. The latter was because that was the day of the Outback Bowl over in Tampa, and there were always game-related activities going on at the beach during the days before.
(Side note: apparently for the upcoming season, the bowl sponsorship has gone to Reliaquest, so farewell to the Outback name after 27 years.)
For the 2002 edition, South Carolina was taking on (The) Ohio State University in a rematch from the previous year, and I ended up with a bunch of female Buckeyes on stage with me during my rendition of Nelly’s Ride Wit Me.
Spring Break was even wilder. I don’t recall the exact year. It could’ve been anywhere from ’01 to ’03), but one weekend Fanny’s was packed, probably beyond legal capacity. So I decided to do Back That Azz Up for my first time ever. I promptly ran into a problem when the floor and stage both filled with inebriated college students, partially obstructing my view of the lyrics monitors.
I didn’t have the song completely memorized, and my brain kept trying to switch back and forth between the dirty and clean versions. I’m not even entirely positive which lyrics were coming up anyway. All I could see were wildly flailing heads and azzes.
I stumbled my way through; I’m pretty sure I made up some words that weren’t even part of the song. The beat was all that seemed to matter anyway, so I managed to escape that misfire unscathed.

Nice! I imagine I would screw up Back That Thang Up at some point–it’s pretty relentless.
I’m pretty sure I did a few rap songs in my various karaoke outings in Japan, but I have no memory of a specific song. No doubt they were done well beyond the two-drink point, when individual performance gives way to a room full of people all singing into the mics as loudly as they can. Once in a while a group from another room would hear us and join in. Good times!
I always wanted to do “Bring the Noise” by Public Enemy, but I don’t recall seeing it as an option. And I think I could do “When Will They Shoot” by Ice Cube pretty well, if I could manage to censor 15% of the lyrics on the spot. 😊
Yeah, the shows I frequented always had a limited selection of rap (mostly Tone Loc and Vanilla Ice level)… I ended up buying a couple of my own discs just so I’d have something more. I still gravitated toward the mainstream radio-friendly stuff though, since that’s what I knew by heart. I haven’t done karaoke in way too long… I’ve been looking at recent/current songs that I might like to try and this one seems like it could be fun (minus the kangaroo and chicken):

Yeah, that seems like fun.
I too have not done karaoke in forever…I think I would be pretty bad at this point. I don’t even sing in the shower that much anymore. Maybe I would just stick to Bob Dylan…
Ahhh, this had me laughing pretty good aaron, nicely done!! You totally had me picturing Sandra Bullock dancing with Betty White singing “Get Low” in The Proposal
I can’t believe Outback lost its sponsorship for its bowl game. You know it’s still gonna be called the Outback Bowl by everyone though, right?? Like the Steelers fans who will no doubt continue to call their home field Heinz Field until the end of time – out of spite – and their refusal to learn the new name…. out of spite. [Raises hand high in the air]
So, we’ve got a Steeler fan in the house!.
Been my favorite NFL team since, since, well since Kennedy was in office.

While mom was from Philly, dad was western PA, and I just kinda latched onto who his side of family pulled for; the Eagles were secondary.
Haha, that’s the truth… Kinda like Amalie Arena where the Lightning play, most folks here still just refer to it as the Ice Palace.
Fun fact, the company I work for became affiliated with Acrisure earlier this year (not “bought out” exactly, but under their corporate umbrella), so the name already rolls off my tongue. Heinz Field still sounds better though.
“Acrisure” sounds like I should follow up by saying ‘gesundheit’ to the speaker….
I still refer to Tampa’s arena as the St Pete Times Forum. Was it ever officially the Ice Palace, or was that just the moniker the locals wound up giving it? I don’t even remember now!
I would’ve guessed it was a nickname, but I looked it up and it was officially the Ice Palace for the first six years of its existence. The St. Pete Times (later the Tampa Bay Times) got the first naming rights starting in 2002.
Psst, Aaron3000, don’t tell mt58 that he heart button still doesn’t work and here’s a heart for you.
Much appreciated!
(And I won’t tell him, I’ve done enough tattling on his IT guy for one week.)
Love the song choices and that despite your reticence you still got up and gave it all you all. From an audience point of view I wouldn’t worry about whatever happened during Ice Ice Baby. It seems like part of the attraction to me that if the singer isn’t on form then being entertainingly bad / drunk is a fine substitute.
I think that night I may have bypassed being entertainingly drunk and gone straight to object-of-pity, although not quite Hasselhoff-eating-floor-burgers depths.
Didn’t expect to hear news from this place! Reliaquest?? Pfft don’t think so, cuz.
Great stories. Love all the contemporary details you put in. I’ve never done karaoke, my personality has precluded me from ever doing so. Wouldn’t mind just the one performance to see what it’s like.
Glad to see you added the The in OSU haha. Had a college professor one time who would rib one of his students who was applying to grad school there by intoning the The as deeply as possible when talking about it. “How’s it going with THE Ohio State, Seth?”
Long time legacy readers over at SG-TNOs will recall that we had a running gag about how to refer to the boys who hung out at The Hotel California:
Which is correct? Is it “Eagles” or “THE Eagles?”
I used to write a weekly Friday recap over there. On the day that Fallin’ In Love was up for discussion, I cooked this up:
“I can’t help but be happy, 44 years on, for all
fourthree of The Hamilton, The Joe-Frank, and The Reynolds for having a number one record.”“And, if I’m recalling my daytime TV advertising correctly, big respect for their subsequent career re-boot, for starting an esteemed law firm of the same name:”
“You’ll faw in love with our impassioned advocacy for your tragic slip-and-fall incident at Kroeger.”
Ah, how THE memories light the corners of my mind.
I love how it wasn’t even Reynolds on their #1, it was Dennison!
And poor Dennison doesn’t even merit a “The”…😟
“Time to Change”, now you’re talking. That’s peak Brady Bunch Kids. Somebody posted “It’s a Sunshine Day” on the mothership. I didn’t want to turn the Brady Bunch discography into a heated debate, so I left it alone. “Time to Change” is what I remember most about that show. Christopher Knight, I suspect, gave Alex Ounsworth the idea that singing artfully offkey would make him indie famous.
What’s with that Florence Henderson/Barry Williams duet? It’s like The Manchurian Candidate: The Musical. The seventies were so weird. I was cognizant for part of it, but not all of it.
I’m sorry.
