Hello again fellow TNOCS’ers!
Wait, maybe that should be “TNOC-ERS”?
Or how about “T-KNOCKERS?”
Sorry, Gary – it must be the excitement in the air!
Because it’s time for Round 3 of the Top Song of the 2000’s Tournament!
The Super Sweet 16!
And If you thought the first two rounds had tough choices, get ready to start rending garments:
Starting NEXT week, there will be consolation rounds for the songs that lose.
The songs that lose in the round below will still be in competition for the #9 and #10 spots.
As a reminder:
- When you are voting, just pick your favorite of the choices.
- Not the one that was more popular or the one that was widely appreciated — just YOUR favorite.
It can be tempting to say, “But Pauly… This song was so iconic, so influential, I just can’t vote against it.” You can vote how you like, but don’t feel like you need to vote for anybody’s feelings but your own. Which song is the one YOU love the most?
Winners of this round will make it to the Elite 8; losers will remain in competition in the consolation round.
And if you’re new around here, welcome! And check out some of the other excellent articles from TNOCS contributors…
Remember: Extended voting is open now until this SUNDAY! Closes at 11:30 PM GMT.
Thanks for stopping by and voting!!!

Editor’s note!
Some weirdness overnight with the coding, so sorry for the slightly late start. We are up and running!
And to all the good folks who are voting whilst lurking, consider registering for the site. It’s completely free, and we’d love to have you on board, commenting about your favorites, your happy victories, and whatever heartbreaking travesties you see in Pauly’s awesome bracket.
Have fun!
Thank you mt! Wonderful job again making my basic content so much more fun!!!! I noticed it a little wonky late last night, but I thought I was jumping the gun. Anyway looks perfect now. Thanks bud!!!
So many gut punches!!! Toxic vs Work It? Yeah! vs Ridin’? Family Affair vs Since U Been Gone? It hurts me to choose between greatnesses!!! 😭
I didn’t find this one so hard. Even though I think every song on there is at least very good, I thought there was a clear winner for each pairing.
The pain will come when everyone else disagrees with my picks.
I was traveling last week and missed the vote, and now I’m shocked and disturbed that “American Idiot” didn’t make it to this round. If you need me, I’ll be drowning my sorrows in a pennyroyal tea.
Also, they didn’t like it enough to put a ring on it…
Just. One. Rock. Song. Left.
I’m actually sick to death of “Seven Nation Army”, but in the absence of “Mr. Brightside”, I had no choice but to stan for rock, even though I much prefer “Umbrella”, after overexposure to the marching band version of the formerly cool White Stripes song.
“Since U Been Gone” definitely is rock-adjacent, FWIW.
Covering Spacehog(!)’s “In the Meantime” gives Kelly Clarkson loads of rock cred. So, agree.
I mentioned in a comment to Phylum in the first column that I had an opinion about which song will win, but didn’t want to reveal it. It still don’t intend to reveal it until it either A) is eliminated or B) wins. It’s still in contention so far…
Of course you’ll have to take me at my word on this… 😉
Pretty sure you’re putting your thumb on the scale a la mid-90s Cashbox.
I’m trying not to do that… And I didn’t divulge anything. If you think you can parse my previous comments and determine which song I think will win (note, not necessarily my favorite song), then you have powers beyond my imagination.

I’m really curious as to how “Maps” would have fared. I was expecting bigger things for “Mr. Brightside”.
You’re living in the wrong simulated universe, cappie. I’m sure “Maps” was a nominee and a Sweet 16 contender in a different one.
Somewhere out there, “grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg” topped the Hot 100.
The sea change, for me, was when Carly Rae Jespen’s E * MO * TION finished high in the 2015 Pazz and Jop. I was shocked. But I bought it at Tower Records. I like it. But not as much as Grimes’ Art Angels.
Evolve and change, or turn into the “get off my lawn” guy, I guess. If it was 1995, I think Hop Along’s Painted Shut would get AOTY honors. That was like the most old-school indie rock album of the decade.
*Best Buy.
I only like 6 of these songs, but 4 of them are all-timers for me and if any of them are eliminated and White Stripes survives, I will be feeling what v-dog is already feeling with Green Day out. It could get ugly here.
Right now, 50% of the ones I voted for looks like they may not make it to the next round. Yep — it’s just like March Madness.
Sorry folks, no way “Paper Planes” was better than “Lose Yourself”.
Nope. No way.
Hardest choice this round? Seven Nation Army vs Umbrella. Sorry RiRi, Jay-Z lost it for you in a squeaker.
I cordially disagree with your opinion of Paper Planes vs Lose Yourself. MIA all the way. And if you have a problem with that I’m happy to accept that we’re all entitled to our own opinions, even if they’re wrong.
Some mighty fierce trash talk for you there 😁
“Paper Planes” is the clear winner in that pick. But I anticipate that dutch will be vindicated by the end of the vote session.
[Shakes puny fist at world in general]
😁
This is gonna be good… -grabs popcorn-
I ended up making the same pick as you, but that was my hardest pick this round.
I’m not quite at the point where I like everything that’s left. The match up between Usher and Chamillionaire leaves me cold but every other song is at least a 7 with a few 10s.
The way the voting has gone in previous rounds and the standings at the moment I know what I think will win but hey ya’ll, I’m keeping that to myself for now.
Whereas the song that’s my favourite is looking like it’s in a close fight. C’mon Paper Planes, you got this (maybe).
Paper Planes vs. Lose Yourself – ouch-y
I thought “Poker Face” over “Hey Ya!” was the easiest pick of the round…
You of course meant “Hey Ya!” over “Poker Face.” Glad I could correct you! 😁
I think the ugliest part in the next round of voting actually is going to be in the consolation bracket to see who’s number nine and 10. If voting is so tight that the rest of the numbers come in pretty close to the top two there, well … let’s just say there should be some interesting reading in the comments section here.
