Volume 2 Of Chuck Small’s “Who Sings It ? “

In the introduction to this series, I said the “Who Sings It?” CD series I created tended to keep tracks in chronological order.

I lied… Or… my memory was faulty.

Which is probably a more accurate explanation – as this second set shows.

On the bright side, at least we know what to put in Chuck’s stocking.

In this installment, several performers were known as well for their acting accomplishments as much as anything they put on vinyl.

Many more people know Vicki Lawrence as Carol Burnett’s erstwhile sidekick, a longtime game show and talk show host, and “Mama” from “Mama’s Family” rather than them singer of a classic story-song No. 1, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.

Complete sidebar: The song’s content has nothing to do with this classic Julia Sugarbaker rant from “Designing Women…”

… other than the invocation of its title. But it’s still worth your three minutes to watch it. Dixie Carter was a comic gem.

Cheryl Ladd was known mainly as the actor who portrayed the younger sister of Farrah Fawcett-Majors on “Charlie’s Angels.”

But she made her own name quickly, with a Top 40 hit in 1978, “Think It Over.”

The song spawned a goofy Long-Distance Dedication story on American Top 40, where a teenage boy asked her to his prom and wanted her to “think it over.” She, of course, declined – but with a sweet thank-you for the thought.

And while Paul Nicholas is barely an after-thought in the United States, he’s far better known in the United Kingdom as a longtime stage and screen actor than as the singer of “Heaven on the 7th Floor.”

On the other hand, while Dobie Gray had successful acting experience in a touring production of “Hair,” he’s far better known for his classic 1973 hit “Drift Away” (and, to a lesser extent, the 21st century duet remake of that song with Uncle Kracker).

This go-around, there’s only one song not on Spotify, and another whose version isn’t quite the
same as the original.

The playlist for this week can be found at: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5V2j4tp8TkAn3KoXgO7fpu

Here are the YouTube links for those two missing songs:

Lady Flash’s
“Street Singin’”
(1976):

Barry Manilow’s backing trio had one moment in the chart sun. And it’s a shame it’s not on Spotify (although their work with Manilow is). Here’s a YouTube link:

As I listen to it now, I hear echoes of Manilow’s “It’s a Miracle,” which makes sense, since he co-wrote and co-produced this song, one year after “Miracle.”

Where were we before the Internet? Back in the day, I thought the Raes were a sibling vocal group along the lines of the Pointer Sisters.

Turns out they were a married duo, popular for a bit in Canada, whose sole U.S. charter peaked at No. 61.

This one got a lot of airplay on Chicago FM radio in early 1979.

And for those wondering how in the world I could include Meri Wilson’s “Telephone Man” in this set?

Remember: I was 13 going on 14 in the sexy summer of ’77.

Which of these do you like? Hate?

I knew more of these songs today. Some I know well, but probably would not be able to tell you “who sings it” (like “Tighter Tighter”…I always forget that one).

One of the best treasures is to rediscover a song you loved as a kid and haven’t heard since then. That’s a hard order to fill anymore, since we music nerds are always scouring for music. I listened to that song by Night “Hot Summer Nights”, hoping that it would click. (I had really leaned heavy into radio listening in 1979). But I didn’t recognize it. I even dug deeper into a #7 AC song from 1980, “Love on the Airwaves”, but nothing. Same with The Raes…I wanted to know that song, but couldn’t place it. Most of them are pretty good, though. (But not all, lolly lolly)

Odyssey’s “Native New York” is one of the all-time Disco Club Classics – I wish it’d gotten higher on the charts, but it did better than another all-timer, Taana Gardner’s “Heartbeat”.

I know considerably less of this weeks selection compared to last week. Some eclectic programming, from The Lord’s Prayer to Kung Fu Fighting in a couple of steps. When Carl said ‘everybody’ was kung fu fighting is he sure that included nuns?

While Dobie Gray may be more familiar to you with Drift Away, for me its The In Crowd.

And Paul Nicholas; life is full of surprises. He was a pretty big name here in the 70s and 80s. Mainly as an actor in sitcoms and musicals but 1976 was a big year with three top 20 hits.

It’s difficult to decide which was worst: Dancing With The Captain or Grandma’s Party or Reggae Like It Used To Be.

No actually, as bad as the other two are they can’t compare to the brass neck of claiming this is reggae like it used to be. It very definitely is not.

Sample lyric: ‘I had a reggae-pneumonia, I went to my doctor’.

As one perceptive YouTube comment says ‘a f***ing crime against humanity’

The mention of “Telephone Man” brought back a memory of trying not to be late to classes in 6th grade (1979/1980.) Our vice-principal apparently was trying to be fun (and progressive?) and instead of bells telling us when to leave and get to class, he would play records over the loud speaker. We called it “the music.”

Kids would bring records to play and someone in the office would choose a couple and play them for the five minute passing period. Imagine the excitement when a 45 stopped playing…were you late or were they just changing the record? (A new record would usually play and you could relax as you were safe from a late slip and a swat.)

I assume some kid had a copy of the two-year old “Telephone Man” and brought it in to be played. As a sixth grader of age 11 and very naive, I had no idea it meant anything other than a catchy song about the installation of a telecommunication device. (I am having trouble getting the “Hey Lolly Lolly” part out of my head right now.) Did the Vice-Principal or the office staff realize what was being played?? If so, maybe they enjoyed the song and kept playing it a lot.

That Vice-Principal and “The Music” were not around in 7th grade and we had gone back to a regular bell schedule. Certain songs though take me back to 6th grade and worrying about getting to class on time like “Babe” by Styx, “Cupid” cover by The Spinners, and of course “Telephone Man.”

How was I not aware Dobie Gilis was an actor???

This made me wonder – you know how in the 80s it was a bunch of male actors who suddenly thought they could sing? It seemed to lean more towards actresses in the 70s. Were there any 80s actresses who tried to make a record?? I am drawing a blank. Madonna doesn’t count. 😁

And since I know many here share the same nostalgic warm fuzziness of Letterman’s Christmas Spectacular’s back in the day, enjoy some 2023 warm fuzzy updated Darlene Love joy.

Kylie Minogue started off acting in Australian soap Neighbours which became unfeasibly huge in the UK in the late 80s. She launched a singing career on the back of it in 1987 and was instantly massively successful – and still is in much of the world even if she didn’t make a big impact in the US.

What did Pia actually star in? Was it one of those nighttime soaps? I always thought of her like a Carmen Electra type ‘star’ that just existed like the Kardashians…!

Probably the best movie Pia was ever in, which gives you an idea of the quality of films she starred in:

Speaking of Dobie, if I were he, I would have released an album called Portrait of Dobie Gray.

But that’s just me.

Ah, that’s too funny I typed that! I hate when brain knows one thing and fingers type another ….. lol

That’s like the realization last week that my confusing Paul Weller and Peter Murphy for years in the 80s and 90s had nothing to do with them and everything to do with the fact Peter Weller played Murphy in Robocop!!!

Also, if Peter Weller had played Peter Murphy in a Bauhaus biopic, I wouldn’t have complained…

Hey, I actually know some!

At least three, and “Telephone Man” sounds weirdly familiar to me, though I have no idea where I would have heard it from. Maybe a Dr Demento comp? I’m stumped.

Oh, and maybe “The Lights Went Out in Georgia” doesn’t count because I only know Reba’s version. But, ya know…progress!
